Hamsters and Gerbils

Hamsters are one of the most popular of the small pets. They are easy to look after but can be difficult to handle for young children. In addition, they are nocturnal so tend to be asleep in the day and active at night.

Varieties

More than twenty varieties have been bred from the original so called 'Golden Hamster'. Cream, white, blue, black, tortoiseshell, sable, grey, cinnamon, banded and tricolour coat specimens are now available. Along with the smooth coat there are now Satin, Long Haired and Rex Varieties. Although other species such as the Russian and the Chinese are now captive bred, the original golden hamster is still the one most in demand and readily available as pets.
